The S&P 500 (U.S. broad market equity index) gained 9.89 points, up 0.14%, at 7,119.03, while the Nasdaq Composite (U.S. technology-heavy index) rose 30.89 points, up 0.13%, to 24,435.29.

All three major indices posted modest gains at the open, with the Dow Jones leading the advance.
